Individual, couple,
family and group therapy

Looking at the View

Individual counseling and therapy

Counseling and therapy is a joint process between yourself and a trained professional. It aims to help people understand, overcome and deal with personal difficulties such as difficult personal relationships, anger, conflict, trauma, abuse and many more.

Family therapy and couples counseling

Family therapy and couples counseling are techniques where the therapist meets the individual and one or more other family members. The intention is that, whatever the difficulty, other family members are part of the solution and therefore should be included in the therapy or treatment.

Specializations

Specialization focused on trauma

We offer therapeutic support to individuals who have experienced trauma and it focuses on safety and emotional stabilization. Therapists may use a variety of techniques, such as graded exposure, narrative rehearsal, cognitive behavioral therapy, and EMDR therapy to help clients overcome their trauma and regain a sense of control and well-being in their lives.

EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps, among other things, to overcome traumatic experiences and reduce the emotional distress often associated with them. EMDR therapy helps to "unblock" negative memories/symptoms stored in the nervous system, making it easier for the brain to process the information related to the experience. This makes it easier to "digest", offering a favorable perspective on the present. To achieve this, EMDR uses different modalities of alternating bilateral stimulation, with eye movement, sound or touch.

Autism Spectrum Specialization

The Mind at Peace Centre realizes that services for autism are a necessity for the community. As such, a variety of specialized services are offered to provide support. Among the services offered, the psychological evaluation service helps confirm the diagnosis. This service includes assessment of the intellectual, social, behavioral and emotional profile of a population of all ages and offers recommendations. The assessment is carried out in collaboration with a Speech Therapist.

Therapeutic support is also offered for the person served and his/her family in the face of a diagnosis, also, psycho-education and accompaniment with a specialized approach (SACCADE) is given for the person to feel well rounded support.

SACCADE is a neurodevelopmental approach, specialized on the autism spectrum and based on scientific research. The approach uses cognitive strategies geared to the internal functions and needs of the person with autism. The use of these strategies is intended to help people on the autism spectrum gain access to more information and better understanding, communication and expression of their emotions.

Specialized support for giftedness or double exceptionality

Young people with giftedness or double exceptionality have a developmental process that differs from the norm. Although they have exceptional abilities, they experience real difficulties for which it is important to understand the particularities of their functional capacity.

The Mind at Peace Center therefore offers a psychological assessment to confirm the diagnosis as well as to help improve the understanding of their strengths and challenges. The psychologist can also give recommendations tailored to their unique profile. Therapeutic support services are also available for children and their parents, and for adults with giftedness, to help them fully understand and live with the particularities of their exceptionality.

The somatic approach

The somatic approach aims to increase body awareness in relation to well-being. The word 'soma' comes from the Greek for 'body'.  As such, the somatic approach includes a range of experiential approaches aimed at reclaiming body awareness in order to improve well-being.

The service includes awareness of breathing, body and thoughts through guided visualization and movement. The approach is based on the premise that the difficulties we experience on different levels: social, biological, psychological and spiritual, can become embedded in the body and can prevent us from living a life in harmony with body and mind.

To this end, the intention of the somatic approach is to guide you in experiencing moments of mind-body connection by interrupting the stress response cycle.

Equi-psychotherapy

Some members of our team hold certifications in equi-psychotherapy.This type of therapy uses horses as mediators and facilitators of therapy.  In other words, the horse's emotional state cannot be controlled, but you can influence the horse's state in positive directions by consciously managing your own bodily reactions, as well as your thought processes and responses to stress and trauma (H.E.A.L.™).

This type of therapy offers a series of ground work with the horses with a specialized therapist and equine specialist(to ensure your safety). Anyone can benefit from equi-psychotherapy sessions, regardless of age, and treatments are catered to the person’s needs.

You'll notice benefits such as improved self-esteem, improved assimilation of cognitive and emotional functions,  improved communication, gain more realistic situation assessment, etc. Basically, the horse doesn't recognize labels or diagnoses; it accepts the person as he or she is at the time of the session. What's more, this type of therapy is adapted to different age groups, to family or relationship therapy, to the person's level of physical ability, and is a suitable approach for people who have experienced trauma. Educational and group sessions are also available.

Specialization and support for LGBTQIA+ people

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community often face unique obstacles such as a lack of resources, isolation, prejudice, unsuitable therapeutic approaches and so on. The members of the Centre's team have this population at heart, which is why several members have specializations related to the particular needs of the people belonging to this community as well as for their families.

In this way, the Mind at Peace Centre offers various types of support to LGBTQIA+ people and those around them.  These services include specialized therapeutic services to meet the needs of each individual. What's more, this support also extends to offering accompaniment to family members in need.

In addition to therapy, the Mind at Peace Centre also offers specific psychological assessments for the community, such as referral letters for hormone treatments and gender confirmation surgeries.

Accompaniment for parents in separation or legal situations

The Mind at Peace Centre recognizes that parental divorces/separations are not always easy to manage for family members, and that people would never imagine ending up in legal situations related to family conflicts. Unfortunately, these situations are a reality that greatly impact all family members. For this reason, here are a variety of service offered to meet the varied needs of these complex situations:

Co-parenting sessions in case of conflict

High-conflict co-parenting sessions refer to specialized interventions designed to help separated or divorced parents who are experiencing ongoing conflicts related to parenting their children. These sessions provide a safe, structured environment where parents can resolve their differences, improve communication and develop cooperative parenting strategies so that everyone in the family comes out a winner. The emphasis is on finding mutually beneficial solutions and reducing the negative impact of conflict on the children involved.

Parenting capacity assessments

Parenting capacity assessments involve an in-depth evaluation of a parent's ability to meet the needs of his or her child(ren). These assessments typically involve gathering information on various aspects of parenting, including the parent's emotional well-being, communication skills, understanding of child development and ability to provide a safe and nurturing environment. The assessment aims to evaluate the parent's strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement, with a view to ensuring the child's well-being and determining appropriate parenting arrangements or interventions where necessary. These assessments are facilitated by a psychologist and a social worker.

Voice of the Child Assessment

The Voice of the child assessment refers to the child's opinions and wishes in relation to custody decisions and visitation with parents during legal processes. Every child of sufficient maturity has the right to objective representation in legal proceedings. In other words, the child will have the chance to meet with a therapist whose aim will be to fully understand his or her wishes and needs in an objective manner. This assessment is sometimes done in one meeting, while in other cases several sessions are required to better understand the child's opinion and the reasons behind his or her wishes. A report is then filed with the Court.

Reconsolidation therapy

Reconsolidation therapy: Based on the latest discoveries in neuroscience, the innovative reconsolidation therapy has been extensively tested in clinical trials. This method combines a pharmacological agent with light psychotherapy. It aims to reduce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in people exposed to intense emotional shock (accidents, aggression, attacks, natural disasters). Focusing on repairing post-traumatic disorders rather than masking their symptoms, it marks a therapeutic revolution in psychiatry. Reconsolidation therapy is also proving effective for "adjustment disorder" and "complicated or pathological bereavement".
